Sports and advertising are old friends by now, but you really should take a closer look at where those advertising dollars are going. A better return on that kind of investment would be through promotional products about baseball, not on flashy easy-to-forget ads on the jumbo screen.

The beginning of every year has its Bowl Season, where football and the marketing bonanza that surrounds it is at its strongest, and when fall rolls around we see another US sports tradition step into the spotlight.  Baseball and all of that nice marketing potential gets big in October with the World Series!  It isn't clear yet which teams will be making it to the series, but you can be your own All Star by getting to work early on how you'll capitalize on this big sports event.

This sport is no NASCAR, where every square inch of every surface seems for sale, but baseball has found a lot of ways to make money off its image and promotional products companies sure have as well!   For more "traditional" advertising methods the MLB stadiums around the country offer sponsor space on their scoreboards, you've got the "this replay sponsored by..." avenue, and you can even get commercials on the high tech giant television displays that are becoming quite common in modern sports arenas.

That's all well and good, but signs at a sports event might not really be the ticket.  These things cost a lot of money for the theoretical thousands of eyes on your brand, but most people are going to go home after the game and not remember any of the advertisements they saw.  They can't take the signs or jumbo scoreboard advertising with them and will probably remember the game itself instead of your advertisements.

The trick is to keep your advertisement in front of someone regularly, and this is where baseball promotional items would give you a line drive into your potential customers' awareness.  People will take the promotional products you give them home or to the office, or maybe even leave them in the car regularly.  Chances are good, depending on the item, that you can get your advertising in front of customers and clients on a frequent basis.

What're the good, the bad, and the ugly baseball related promotional items?  We've already covered one of the "good" qualities: something that customers and clients will see regularly.  A related quality is the utility of the promotional product.  If it's useful it'll get used a lot, and you'll get more eye time but you also need to keep in mind that some items can be considered useful in one situation and useless in another.  Keeping them small or at least conveniently sized is another big one.

If you have taken out some star employees to the ball game, you might consider including some crystal sports awards.  Although it isn't the same as advertising to a potential customer, doing some internal marketing and brand strengthening is always a good idea, too.  For the broader audience you could go with baseball jerseys or baseball shirts embroidered with your company name to tie your brand in with the baseball motif.  Along similar lines, you can go with baseball caps as well!  Customized baseballs are an option, but unless you're fielding a team they're really not great as a promotional product or a corporate gift.  Baseballs will likely end up in a drawer out of the way, or rolling around a garage, or even in the garbage.  Without a signature from a famous player, it won't be displayed anywhere to serve much good.

In baseball, as with any sport, there's a lot of advertising dollars flowing from company to company.  Spending a lot on a sign or a cheesy advertisement on the jumbo screen that people will forget as soon as they leave the stadium (if not as soon as they look away from the screen) is a great way to waste funds with little return.  Get those baseball promotional products out there instead, and you'll be able to develop a brand with a lot less money at risk.
